Painter-Refinisher

Join our team as a Painter-Refinisher located in the esteemed Architect of the Capitol, Library Buildings & Grounds, Tenant Services Division, Projects Branch, Painting Night Section. As a Painter-Refinisher you will be responsible for refinishing doors, door frames and other woodwork. You will participate in projects involving historical colors, complex striping, designs and panel refinishing.
TOUR OF DUTY: Sunday evening to Thursday morning, 6:00 PM through 4:30 AM As a Painter- Refinisher, you will: Perform complex coating work using any of the accepted methods of the trade such as graining, shadowing and shading colors. Match and mix colors by eye and/or with a tinting machine to match historical and faded colors. Refinish and/or finish new walnut and mahogany doors, metal doors and cabinets etc. to match historical natural wood finishes within the Capitol Complex. Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats. Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel and other finishes to equipment, buildings, decorative walls and doors and/or other structures, using brushes, spray guns or rollers and polish final coats to specified finishes. Prepare interior and exterior plaster, metal, wood and masonry surfaces. Plaster or spackle small holes and cracks. Mix and prepare paints, stains and other products. Fill cracks, holes and joints with caulk, putty, plaster or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives. Calculate amounts of required materials and paint, based on surface measurements. Remove old finishes by stripping, sanding, wire brushing or using water and/or abrasive blasting. Smooth surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool and/or sanding machines.
Requirements
You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the job announcement. You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT(S) required for this position. Ability to perform Painter-Refinisher duties and responsibilities without more than normal supervision including: Using a computerized maintenance management system (e.g., WebTMA) to receive, update, and close work orders, accurately document work performed, and track materials and job status; Safely prepare and repair historic wood surfaces, demonstrated through proper use of stripping methods, sanding techniques, and repair practices that preserve original detailing; Independently performing wood finishing and refinishing tasks including applying stains, varnishes, oils, paints, and protective coatings; and Producing a final finish that matches an existing or documented sample for color, grain, and sheen, and overall appearance.
